Improscaping

IMPROSCAPING: a sexy, funny and original extravaganza which tracks the evolution of one woman’s body image through time. Themes such as obsession with weight, bad hair days, and fear of bikinis take the audience on a visual journey from the provocative to the sublime. Susanne Carter of Carter Productions is the performer and creator of IMPROSCAPING. Hilarious antics are accompanied by recorded interviews with Susanne’s chiropractor, photographer, costume designer and more. Six dance improvisations are woven together into a 60 minute show and include the unusual use of props, costumes and a musical score. A strong physicality has emerged. In most cases Susanne finds herself at odds with her own body. IMPROSCAPING, dance improvisations based on body image to create a visual landscape, is personal, edgy, touching, and bound to leave you chuckling.

Description
IMPROSCAPING is a dance performance with improvisations based on body image used to create a visual landscape. IMPROSCAPING includes six solos woven together into a 60 minute piece using humorous recorded anecdotes about Susanne’s body. These solo pieces work together to create a visual experience for the audience through costumes, props and a musical score. The sound score includes interviews with Susanne’s chiropractor, photographer, costume designer, hair dresser, and ballet teacher.

“I coined the word IMPROSCAPING to define the process I have been using in the dance studio. I began with centering techniques to recall memories of my body image through time and then recorded these images in a variety of ways, molding them into improvisations using concepts rather than steps. Through this a strong physicality has emerged and in most cases I find myself at odds with my own body” says Carter.

The show premiered at Walker’s Point Center for the Arts, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, November 12, 2006 to an enthusiastic crowd. In March, 2007, the show was performed at UW-Milwaukee as part of a series on beauty.
